Designed for:
This competency applies to students who are required to wear breathing apparatus for part of their job - because they are working in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, in an anoxic atmosphere or for other applications requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

Description:
This unit covers competence associated with the operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere.

  • Complete appropriate checks of a breathing apparatus
  • Don and adjust a breathing apparatus
  • Use a breathing apparatus and control equipment
  • Demonstrate breathing apparatus emergency procedures
  • Follow organisation’s procedures
  • Correctly remove a breathing apparatus
  • Types of irrespirable atmospheres and other hazards

Unit of Competency

MSAPMOHS216A Operate breathing apparatus
AS/NZS 1715:2009 recommends that as a minimum retraining shall be considered at least annually.

Pre-entry Requirements:
This unit requires the ability to interpret any permits or other documentation associated with the wearing of breathing apparatus for the job. Writing is required to the level of completing required workplace reports. Numeracy is required to enable the determination of the available working time from a breathing apparatus set and similar activities. The student will require a cleanly shaven face in order to complete the practical elements of the course.

Assessment:
Competence in this unit will be assessed by practical activities using breathing apparatus in workplace scenarios and will involve theoretical and targeted questioning.

Delivery Method:
Classroom theory via PowerPoint or the issued learner resource including use of audio-visual material and practical activities involving breathing apparatus.
